Virginia community colleges experience record growth in the past two years
By Erika Wells
The struggling economy and rising education costs are two reasons that student enrollment in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) has increased by more than 15,000 in the past two years. Preliminary fall semester figures show another 13,000 have enrolled since last year.
The record growth rates have prompted state officials to add about 2 million square feet of instruction space and hire adjunct instructors within the next year, said Jeffrey Kraus, assistant vice chancellor for public relations for VCCS.
